Lab Help

Introduction

  • To make things easier, we've linked your Arts computer lab account with your Pheme password. That's one fewer password to remember! You should now login with the following details:
    Name: Student Number
    Password: Pheme Password
  • Please keep your computer lab home directory under 4GB. If the disk becomes full we will need to remove oversize directories from the system. Backup your work at all times (see below).
  • If you intend to use the Internet on campus you will need to upgrade your student email to a full service account. The University has introduced a free Internet quota for students, which can only be accessed once you have upgraded to a full service email account.
  • When trying to access the Internet on lab computers, a dialog box will appear asking for proxy authentication. If you have upgraded to a full service account, enter your email username and password to obtain Internet access.
  • Can't get into the labs? To get in and out of the labs you need to touch your campus card against the black card reader next to the door to unlock it. You must be enrolled in at least one current Arts unit to be eligible for entry to the labs.

Energy Saving

To save power, lab computers will shutdown every day at 6pm. The power button is low at the back of the computer, on the same side as our UWA asset barcode. Use the keyboard to wake the computer from sleep, or to switch on, press the power button for two seconds and release. At quiet times, please switch off after use.

Postgrads

The postgrad labs and study rooms are locked: apply in person to the student helpdesk (room 2.32 Arts building) for the door code to enter the postgrad research labs in rooms G31 Arts and 242 Social Sciences building.

Submitting your Thesis

After you submit your final thesis you will probably want continued access to Faculty resources. Please request an extension to your Arts computer account and door access either by email to labhelp@mail.arts.uwa.edu.au, or the helpdesk in Room 2.32 Arts Building.

End of Semester, and Backing up your Work

It is quite commonplace for accounts to expire at the end of semester. All lab accounts are validated against student records, and when it seems your units are not currently valid we send an email alert. If all your Arts units for the current semester are complete, or you don't use the computer labs, then you need not be concerned.

UWA email and internet access are not affected any changes we make. Your lab account will be restored once you re-enrol in at least one active Arts unit, otherwise you will be notified two weeks later when the account expires.

You should back up your own data and not rely on Faculty facilities. In particular, undergraduates should note that at the end of the year, your existing desktop and documents are removed and a new home directory will be created when you return next year. Refer to our Backing Up Your Documents page for more information.

eMail Alert from ITS

Over the last couple of weeks there has been a large influx of hoax emails relating to updating/gathering banking information for Australian banks. We would like to remind everyone that banks and other financial institutions NEVER request such information using email and that you should delete all such emails without clicking any links or opening any attachments.

Emails like this are intended to trick you into revealing your login details, which are then used to steal money from your bank account. The websites linked in the message often attempt to infect computers running Microsoft Windows with malicious software (viruses, worms or trojans). If infected, your computer could then send your confidential information to criminals and/or cause problems for other computers on the UWA network.

Please be extremely cautious with opening links from any unsolicited or unusual email. If you don't know the sender, just delete the email message.

For more information on protecting your home or non-ITS managed computer, please see the AusCERT site - http://www.auscert.org.au/3352
