Faculty Computing Service Catalogue


The following is an overview of the services that Faculty Computing (FC) provides within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (FAHSS).  Some non-user related services are listed here because they are critical for the provision of IT support to FAHSS.

FC's Advice and support services.

  • Advice on general computing issues
  • Purchasing advice (configuration/vendor/model)
    • Recommended equipment and software list
  • Access to FAHSS intranet, campus network and internet
  • Application/Service access and support (core applications, database solution support, calendaring, etc)
    • Provide access to services offered by FC
    • Loan equipment (CPUs and Peripherals)
    • Assistance and coordination with access to UWA IT services
    • Application-specific recommendations (i.e. guidelines and Frequently Asked Questions)
    • Occasional FC technology presentations and demonstrations
  • Hardware installation, upgrades and diagnosis
    • Provide network connectivity and minimal support for multifunction devices
    • PDAs are supported with Standard Operating Environment (SOE) where practical
    • Limited hardware upgrades that will not compromise warranty (i.e. RAM, PC cards, etc.)
    • Hardware diagnosis to a level where it is determined the item needs to go to supplier for repair

FC's Infrastructure and facilities services.

  • Infrastructure management (i.e. DNS, DHCP network cabling, etc.)
  • Networked home directories for SOE users
  • SOE installation (Macintosh OSX or Windows XP Pro)
  • SOE updates, patches and security releases
  • Select backing up of data, including ad hoc client data restores as per backup guidelines
  • Shared file storage on FAHSS servers
  • Maintain security, virus protection and integrity of SOE machines and computing infrastructure
  • License management (key server/purchasing advice/records)
  • Computer labs (staff/teaching/general access)
  • Network access for non-University owned machines
    • Users to be moved to Student Network Access Project (SNAP) service resulting in additional security for FAHSS and users can have their computers configured with minimal assistance of FC
    • There will be no printing from these computers

FC's Additional services.

Occasionally users have the need to use software to perform their job that is not included in our Standard Operating Environment (SOE).  Licensing restrictions often prevent the software from being distributed widely across the Faculty.  These special cases have to be negotiated and dealt with on an individual basis.
  • Software outside SOE (for SOE machines)
  • Support for machines not on the SOE

FC are not responsible for ?

The following is a list of services that are not the responsibility of FC.
  • Support for non-UWA owned machines
  • Off-campus support
  • End-user training
  • Application training
  • Physically moving equipment
  • Assistance with non-SOE software
  • CD/DVD burning of user data (unless part of FC’s internal activities, such as platform migration, etc.)
  • AV support in venues
  • Photocopier and fax machine support
  • Support for non-UWA activity
  • Support for user self-installed software
  • Any peripheral purchased without prior advice from FC and not on our recommended equipment list
  • Problems resulting from a user choosing to ignore FC’s requests and advice 
  • Support for equipment is no longer serviceable or supported, following advice to School/user
  • Support for non-FAHSS provided software (i.e. PeopleSoft)
  • Extensive hardware upgrades or repair work
  • Hardware installation/support for items such as multifunction devices, fax machines and mobiles

User Responsibility.

The following is a list of responsibilities that users should be aware of to ensure FC can provide the best possible service.
  • Limiting access to services to authorised people only (i.e. not children of staff, etc.)
  • Obtaining adequate training and required knowledge of software and IT practices
  • Regularly backing up data (refer to Backup Guidelines)
  • Using the 'How-To' or 'Help' functions on applications

School Responsibility.

The following is a list of responsibilities that Schools should be aware of to ensure FC can give them the best possible service.
  • Purchasing of equipment and media (placing orders, tracking)
  • Hardware repair liaison
  • Engraving and securing machines (machine owner’s responsibility)
  • Users obtaining adequate training and required knowledge of software and IT practices
