FAHSS Staff IT Information
OverviewWelcome to the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (FAHSS). Throughout your involvement with FAHSS, you will inevitably interact with Information Technology (IT). For your support and advice in all IT matters, FAHSS employs a Faculty Computing (FC) team with a wide variety of technical and support skills to meet your needs. Currently, the FC team consists of the following staff:
- Catherine O'Neil
- Robert Blackstock
- Phil Norris
- James French
- Jovana Taylor
- James Toher
- Shay Telfer
FC also employ a number of casual and contract staff during busy periods or when a particular project warrants outside help. We do our best to introduce these casual members of the team to FAHSS staff as they come on board.
FC has developed a Service Catalogue which contains a list of services that the team provides. This catalogue also defines services that FC is not responsible for, as well as listing some responsibilities we feel belong to you or the school.
For all IT Support requests, simply email ithelp-fahss@uwa.edu.au with a suitable subject line and a detailed outline of your query or the problem you are experiencing. Emails to ithelp-fahss@uwa.edu.au automatically generate a call on the ITS Service Desk so your query or problem is brought to the attention of all team members who monitor the Service Desk. Emailing Faculty Computing is the preferred means of communicating with FC for several reasons. In doing so, you ensure that your request is dealt with at a suitable priority level. Logged calls are monitored by all team members to ensure the appropriate person deals with your request. The system allows FC to track a call's progress and once the call is finished, you are given a chance to provide feedback about your support experience.
Getting startedTo log onto one of our computer lab or staff machines (Macintosh) you must first activate your Arts account. Regardless of whether your are a student, staff or visitor the activation of your account is done through UWA's authentication management system (Pheme). Your relationship to the Faculty will determine the steps you must follow:
- If you are a student, you simply go to https://www.pheme.uwa.edu.au/ and select the Students link; once your Pheme account is activated your Arts account will be automatically activated with the same credentials.
- If you are a staff member, you simply go to https://www.pheme.uwa.edu.au/ and select the Staff link; once your Pheme account is activated your Arts account will be automatically activated with the same credentials. Refer to the Faculty Computing FAQ webpage for further information on requirements for new staff members.
- If you are a visitor, you simply go to https://www.pheme.uwa.edu.au/ and select the Visitors link; once your Pheme account is activated your Arts account will be automatically activated with the same credentials. Refer to the Faculty Computing FAQ webpage for further information on requirements for visitors.
Useful InformationNow that you are able to use the computers in FAHSS, FC advises that you spend some time looking at http://www.uwa.edu.au/it/policy/existing to familiarise yourself with the University IT policies.
FC maintains some very useful web pages that provide guidelines for services and support, and functions like backing up your data, file sharing and more. You can familiarise yourself with this information at http://www.fc.arts.uwa.edu.au/guidelines. A self-help FAQ page containing solutions to more common problems is also available at http://www.fc.arts.uwa.edu.au/labhelp/faq.
Of particular importance are the FC guidelines on Purchasing. This page includes a Recommended Purchasing List as well as advice on managing and replacing IT products.
FC does not provide off-site support or support for privately owned machines. If you are seeking help with setting up your home computer there is a list of recommended IT consultants available at http://www.its.uwa.edu.au/staff/help/extconsultants.
Due to the FAHSS policy of not supporting privately owned machines, it is recommended that staff or students wishing to bring their own private machines on campus should have their laptops configured to SNAP. There are a wide variety of SNAP access points across campus. There is also a growing wireless network that allows wireless-capable laptops access to the network. More information on SNAP can be found at http://www.its.uwa.edu.au/faq_area/general/network_and_internet_access/snap.
Please be aware that any activity you do on the internet is tracked and has an associated charge. Your Centre, Discipline or School is billed on a monthly basis and they currently receive a breakdown of charges by user. More information about network traffic charges can be found at the following URL http://www.its.uwa.edu.au/staff/help/stafffaq/network_usage_faq.
The above information is provided to briefly introduce you to some key IT issues within FAHSS and UWA. Please take time to familiarise yourself with its content. We trust that your IT experience within FAHSS will be a pleasurable one. If you have any queries about this document or anything else regarding IT matters, please email ithelp-fahss@uwa.edu.au. |
