The music and motion picture industries have declared war on
peer-to-peer (P2P) file trading. Universities,
both nationally and internationally, have been a major focus
of this campaign. The Australian Vice-Chancellors'
Committee has developed a paper to examine the legal landscape
relating to P2P file trading. Is it illegal? Who can
be liable? What, potentially, are the penalties? In
Australia, three universities have been subject to Federal Court
action by the music industry with a view to seeking evidence that
students have been using university systems to engage in unlawful
trading of music files.
'Peer-to-Peer File Sharing: the Legal Landscape' is a guide
developed by the AVCC to assist university-level staff and
students to better understand the legal issues relating to P2P
file sharing. This paper is available for download here in PDF format (112k).
Please note: For
more information on P2P and other copyright issues, the UWA Legal
Services site provides excellent, detailed information for staff
and students and can be accessed at http://www.legalservices.uwa.edu.au/lso/copyright.
